One of the most distinctive, articulate and significant Maori voices in NZ belongs to Moana Maniapoto who, with Moana & The Tribe, has taken her music to festivals across the world. Moana has articulated a Maori perspective of colonisation in memorable songs (not the least in the powerful Treaty) and has effectively incorporated taonga puoro into music which refers to rock, soul, classical and reggae - but always sounds solely like Moana-music.
As comfortable performing at a small rural marae as she is to thousands at festival audiences in Russia and Europe, Moana has been awarded the NZ Order of Merit for her services to Maori and music, and in 2007 was also honoured with the prestigious award of NZ Art Laureate. Moana sings with a rare voice with emotional depth and this combined with the sad beauty of her songs, confirms her status as one of NZ’s finest artists.
